Ibanez SS20 Session-Man II Delay Distortion

Certain pedals leave you with your jaw dropped, unable to put them into any real specific kind of category, and that’s always been fun for us here at Pedal of the Day. Today’s pedal, the Ibanez SS20 Session-Man II Delay Distortion, does just that, presenting itself with a no-holds-barred attitude, and making some of the wildest sounds we’ve heard come out of a pedal before. Not your ordinary Delay or Distortion effect, this pink gem is not for everyone….but if you dig it, you REALLY dig it.

The controls on the Session-Man II are the same as on the original version, with a couple of additions for tweakability. Dist-Level sets your output, Dist-Tone cuts or boosts the treble present in your signal and Distortion sets the depth of your gain. D-Time controls your delay time, which has a short range from 7ms-70ms. This Version II, however, has a couple of hidden secrets to let you dial in your sound (as well as you can with a pedal like this). If you open up the footswitch, you’ll find 2 small trimpots inside – one lets you control the delay’s Feedback/Repeats, the other controls the overall mix of the Delay in the signal.

There’s a toggle switch present as well, allowing you to run these effects in either Series or Parallel, thus opening up a broad sonic palette to work with and investigate. This pedal is fairly harsh, unpredictable and wacky, and that’s just the way we like ’em. Made in Japan in the mid-80’s, the Ibanez SS20 Session-Man II Delay Distortion is a fairly rare effect, as not a ton of these were made, and, once you hear, you might understand why. Noisemakers and experimenters, strap on your hats and get ready for a musical journey through a chorus/reverb/ring modulation-filled delay distortion extravaganza the likes of which you’ve never been privy to before. Remember, the demo below is just us attempting to show what this pedal can do – if you don’t dig the sounds the SS20 creates, please don’t shoot the messenger:
