You gotta make your mark in this industry, right? With so many companies and so many pedals on the market, if you don’t stand out, you’re not gonna last. Well, today’s pedal is the first in a lineup of not only aesthetically-pleasing effects, but ones that have the power, grit and usability to make them contenders for years to come. We always love to discover new(er) companies, or ones that might not have a super-recognized name, and get them on the map, and we have the pleasure of doing that once again, for one of the nicer builders we’ve come across. The BJØRN from Fjord Fuzz in Norway is a fuzz, yes, but has elements of octave, synth, distortion and more present, giving you a powerhouse pedal with a lot of options to tweak and enjoy.
The left side of the BJØRN is a fuzz, period. With just a Level control, it will get slightly overdriven, on-the-way-to distorted and nice-and-balls-out fuzzy, just with different settings of the one knob. The right side features a Level control as well, along with Bias and Thickness knobs, which really open this pedal up. Working in tandem, these two set the controls for the heart of the sun, crushing anything that gets in their way and churning out some massive, octave-laden tones with a vengeance.
But wait! Open the BJØRN up, and there are THREE tasty dipswitches inside, just waiting for you to tweak and caress them all day long. With all three in the Down position, everything acts like a normal, awesome fuzz pedal would. But start moving these guys around, and the Octave and Synth stuff starts playing a huge role, leaking into every sonic crevice, nook and cranny you can imagine. The Bias and Thickness controls evolve here as well, making the BJØRN a true experimenter/noisemaker’s dream of an effect. Are you a little scared? Just a little? Good. You should be.
Not really, but this pedal does have some oomph and power, which is exactly what you want in an effect of this nature. Not holding back, with plenty of output volume on tap, and plenty of incentive to create oozing out of its sturdy enclosure, the BJØRN is the first of many pedals from Fjord Fuzz that we will be discussing and demoing over the coming months (and years). For the demo below, we took the liberty of breaking the sounds down into three sections, so make sure you watch through til the end, to take in all that this fuzzy puppy can give ya.
