Here at Pedal of the Day, we love a good Big Muff. Especially the Russian ones. The really, dirty, nasty Russian ones. Get your head out of the gutter, people, we’re talking about FUZZ. Since their inception in late 60’s, Big Muffs have been heard on countless recordings, and are key ingredients to some of the favorite guitar players and bands around: David Gilmour, Thin Lizzy, Kiss, Santana, Smashing Pumpkins, Frank Zappa and more. That said, we love it when a good Muff-based circuit comes through the shop, and we’ve got a rad one for you today. The Ugly Fuzz from Stonegate FX is aptly named, though only for its grit and presence. Each one features a unique paint job, and if you’re impressed by that, wait til you hear how it sounds…
Based on that special Russian Muff circuit from the 90’s, the Ugly Fuzz features Volume, Fuzz/Sustain and Tone controls, as you may imagine. What boosts this guy into another level is the Mids switch. This toggle gives you three differing options to choose from, adding new sounds and dimension to your fuzz tone. In the Up position, you’ve got a Mid-Hump; in the Down position, there’s a Mid-Scoop; in the middle, your mids are flat. Each of these modes produces very different characteristics, but each one has its own voice, and there’s something for everyone to be discovered here.
Using 1% metal film resistors, Epcos Film capacitors and Lumberg audio and power jacks, the Ugly Fuzz is a true bypass monster will doom on a dime, then crush some metal sounds, roll back to overdrive and, of course, completely Muff out. Adding in a bit of delay or phaser really makes it pop, as you’ll hear in our demo video below. Pay attention to these guys at Stonegate FX – if the Ugly Fuzz is any indication of what’s coming down the pipe, we’re all in for a real treat.
