The products created by the team at Mantic Effects are always wild, unpredictable and fairly awesome, let’s face it. From low-end powerhouses like the Beef Bag Subharmonic and the Thug Low End Boost to the tonal enhancements of the Proverb Reverb and Isaiah Delay to the heavy, dirty sounds of the Vitriol Distortion and the Flex TMR PLL Monophonic Synth Fuzz, they’ve got a lot of cool stuff to choose from. Sticking in the heavier department today, we’re going to take a look at the Hivemind, an Octave Square Wave Distortion that brings the rumble and the pain, just like you want it to.
Designed after the DOD FX33 Buzz Box, which was made to emulate the guitar tone of King Buzzo from The Melvins, the Hivemind is really not for the weak of heart…or ears. This little box is loud, powerful and dirty, but retains some gorgeous tones throughout, without getting mucky or bogged down. It pairs a fussy 2-octave down square wave (15MB) with a hissing distortion (DIST), and rounds everything out with a variable low pass filter(HI). There’s a LVL control present as well, which sets your overall volume, of which there is absolutely no shortage.
Each one of these pedal has their paint job applied by hand, making each it’s own individual, one-of-a-kind piece of art. The top-mounted jacks make it an easy fit onto any board, and the Mantic Effects quality shines through in the build and the circuitry, as always. If you’re after that special Buzz Osbourne-type of sound, but want it all packed neatly into a rad, personal pedal, the Hivemind will end your search immediately. Thanks to Mantic for letting us rip through this fella – see the demo below, check out the Mantic website, and have a great weekend!
