Jānis.lv Effect Pedals RNGD Random Noise Generating Delay

Here’s the thing…we don’t really know ANYTHING about the country of Latvia except this: Jānis Altmanis of Jānis.lv Effect Pedals is making some absolutely incredible gear. We’ve had the privilege to check out his Miesnieks Overdrive and Tre Tre Tremolo pedals so far, and he was even kind enough to chat with us for our Weekly Interview Series last summer. Today, we’re jumping into perhaps his craziest concoction yet, the RNGD, a Random Noise Generating Delay that will make you laugh hysterically, weep uncontrollably and question the very limits of the sonic spectrum, all at the same time.

As with all of the pedals from Jānis.lv, the names of the controls are punched into the enclosure and written in Latvian, so for most us, the manual is key (or, just plug in and start moving knobs and switches, ’cause that’s super fun, too!). Skaļums acts as the master volume, Laiks controls the delay time, Atkārto sets the delay’s feedback and Nogurt & Atbild introduce other noise craziness into the mix. Jānis himself even admits it’s hard to explain what the RNGD does, so playing with all of these parameters is essential to your success with this effect.

If you so desire, you can actually turn the delay section OFF, using the O/X toggle switch, leaving you lying in a tepid pool of cacophony that you might well never return from. Two other toggles switches, ^ v and < >, introduce yet another layer of harshness and discord, leaving your amplifier second-guessing it’s chosen path in life, and your neighbors on the verge of putting their abode up for sale. This wonderful pedal is soldered, wired, assembled and finished by hand, as all of the effects pedals from Jānis.lv are, giving them that distinct look and quality throughout.

Working great on guitar, bass and other signal sources as well, the RNGD is a time and soul consuming masterpiece that is specifically designed for the musical experimenter. A pedal that probably wouldn’t go over to well at your local dad rock classic cover band on a Friday night show, this beast engulfs everything around it, chews it up and spits it back out in random bursts of sound and fury. However, it can also be controlled (slightly) and dialed in to create gorgeous soundscapes and add tasty auditory morsels to any rig. Big fat cheers to Jānis and all at Jānis.lv Effect Pedals for this wonderful creation – head over to their Reverb.com shop to snag one of these for your own, but make sure to watch our demo below FIRST, so you know a bit of what you’re about to get into…
