Effects pedals come in all shapes and sizes, and from all over the world. A company we’ve recently discovered, and have had the opportunity to demo some of their gear, such as the Echidna Overdrive and the FuzZ-2 Bass Fuzz Octave is dpFX Pedals from Preveza, Greece. So far, we’ve been on the Bass Pedals train, and we’ve got another one for you today. The Acheron (Αχέρων) is a Bass Overdrive that aims to make your amp “growl” without losing any of your fat low-end tone – spoiler alert: they’ve succeeded.
The Acheron has a myriad of control knobs and switches to explain, so let’s dive right in. The big knob right in the middle is your Gain control, along with Dry and Wet knobs which control the blending of your signal and the pedal’s effects. The Tone knob controls the active low-pass filter of the circuit and sets the amount of high frequencies in your output, but only affects the Wet signal. There’s a lone toggle switch present, which lets you select between 3 (I,II,III) different tone styles for the overdriven signal (I. More High-Mids & Treble; II. More Mids; III. More Low-Mids). The effect of this function and how drastic it is depends on your instrument as well.
As an added bonus, there’s a Boost function on the Acheron, too. Activated by the second footswitch, it boosts your Drive and Volume, and is controlled by Boost knob. Going from a slightly tasty grind to a massive, fat growl, Acheron responds in a wonderful way to the dynamics of your picking. We have the wonderful talents of our pal Todd Tabor once again on the bass guitar in the demo below for this one – be sure to check it out to hear this monster pedal in action, and head over to the dpFX Pedals website for more info on this and all of their lineup of bass and guitar pedals.
