Having worked with the folks over at Godlyke Distributing Inc. many, many times over the years, we are still pleasantly surprised with each new piece of gear they seem to either distribute or create. Today’s pedal falls into the latter category, and comes from their own lineup of effects and pedals called Totally Wycked Audio (TWA). We’re going to take a look at the Side Step™, which is a universal, variable-state low frequency oscillator – in short, this is definitely NOT just another overdrive effect.
Basically, you hook up the Side Step™ to any number of effects pedals or devices, ones that utilize either an Expression input or a +5 control voltage source. The goal is to slave another musical machine to the external LFO, the Side Step™, and create new sonic dimensions without having to alter the existing circuit. An 8-way rotary switch selects the waveform shape of the LFO, and you get to choose from:
Sawtooth
Reverse Sawtooth
Square
Triangle
Sine
Peak
Reverse Peak or
Random (sample/hold)
You can also hook up and Expression pedal to the Side Step™ and, using the Exp Thru switch, control your machine’s parameters using JUST the Expression pedal, without having to unplug the LFO. This and many other variations are available, and work with pedals like ring modulators, delays, envelope filters and more, including setting some wild tap tempo stuff when used with a phaser (check out our demo below to see the Side Step™ working in tandem with the amazing Phasor 2X from Mu-FX). There’s even a nice red LED light that coincides with the rate of the LFO, letting you always know where you’re at, even on the darkest of stages.
Use the Tap Tempo switch or the Rate knob to set your speed after you make your connections, and you’re off to the races. A simple but ingenious little device that sprung from the mind of the marvelous Dweezil Zappa, the Side Step™ is a revolutionary pedal that will twist and turn how you create music once you get it onto your board. Thanks to Kevin and Godlyke Distributing / Totally Wycked Audio for letting us check out this great controller – be sure to visit their website, follow them (and us) on social media, and be sure to watch our demo video and subscribe to our YouTube channel. Happy Holidays!!
