Retro-Sonic Flanger

Flanger is an awesome effect, but one that can be love or hate, depending on whom you ask. Fans of Pink Floyd and The Police likely fall into the “love” category, as some of David Gilmour and Andy Summers’ tones are just drenched in flange, specifically the classic 18v Electric Mistress from Electro-Harmonix. Today, we’re going to check out a pedal that seeks to recreate these awe-inspiring sounds, but housed in a small enclosure and built to today’s modern specs – here is the Flanger from Retro-Sonic.

As with the original units, this Flanger features Rate (speed of the flanger modulation), Range (the effect’s depth) and Color (amount of feedback) controls. This one has a fourth control, though, Level, which lets you dial in the overall output volume. This is an important piece of this effect, as the vintage units were unfortunately known for a noticeable drop in volume when they were engaged. They could be extremely noisy as well, an issue that has been dealt with in this updated machine, but with enough still in the mix to give it that classic feel and tone.

There’s a toggle switch present, too, which turns the LFO (Low Frequency Oscillator) sweep on or off, for another level of available sounds. The Flanger also uses an analog BBD (Bucket Brigade Delay) delay path, and runs on 12-18VDC power, for increased output and headroom. Chorus, vibrato, phaser and flanging tones are all available in this little beauty, and will bring a smile to any music experimenters’ face instantly. We’ve attempted to capture some of the sounds in our demo below, so be sure to check it out, subscribe to our YouTube channel and head over to the Retro-Sonic website to snag a Flanger for your very own!
