Phasers are one of our favorite effects here at Pedal of the Day, as they can enhance your tone and sound a little, a lot or anywhere in between. From smooth, almost background-like subtleties to pulsing, space-infused journeys through the cosmos, phase shifter pedals hold a special place in our (and many others) hearts. Therefore, it’s with great pleasure that we bring a kind of rare, vintage and killer-sounding phaser to your attention today: the 875 Phase Shifter from Electra.
About as simple as it gets, control-wise, the 875 is a cinch to dial in right off the bat. The Vario Phase knob controls the speed/rate of the LFO wave that controls the effect, while the Color switch adds in some feedback and phase intensity. At low levels, you get a sort of tone enhancer, adding in just a smidge of effect to your original sound. As you turn the knob clockwise, the phase effect gets more and more powerful, leading to a spinning, pulsating sonic soundstorm that blasts your tone right into the stratosphere!!!! (or something like that)
Essentially a rebranded Electro-Harmonix Small Stone, the Electra 875 Phase Shifter was produced for a short time in the late 70’s, so these boxes are becoming harder and harder to find. Running on a 3.5mm power source or 9V battery, this phaser sounds great, and isn’t as much of a tone sucker as many pedals from this era happen to be. Most famously played by Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs, you can’t go wrong if you find one of these in good shape – if it’s lasted this many decades so far, there’s a good chance it’ll hold up for several more.
