We have always had a bit of an affinity for the exquisite pedals produced by our friends at Spaceman Effects, and are always excited to check out their creations. One of our favorites was the Saturn V Harmonic Boost, a pedal that just adds that extra little bit of POW! and WOW! that your tone sometimes is lacking. Today’s pedal, the Mercury IV, is also rooted firmly in the Boost department, but with a couple more options and a little bit more dirt on tap if need be…
The Mercury IV is a Germanium Harmonic Boost, a dynamic tone enhancer that coaxes out different harmonic qualities of both instruments and amplifiers. Featuring a whooping +35dB of Gain (!!), this one brings the thunder, while keeping your tone in tact and enhancing it simultaneously. Starting with the knobs, Boost gives you control over how much of that +35dB you want or need in the signal chain. The Harmonics knob blends in light, tube-like harmonic distortion, even adding octave-like overtones to your solos and unique textures to chords. This knob is very reactive to your playing, instrument and pickup choices, and reacts strictly to the input signal, making it a completely different animal for different guitars and playing styles.
There are two toggle switches present on the Mercury IV as well, both enhancing your tone-shaping abilities with ease. There are 3 modes for each independent switch – one for Highs, one for Lows. The modes for each allow you to dial in multiple shades of treble boost, mid boost, bass boost and full boost, for a plethora of tone-enhancing qualities. The unique, discrete, analog circuit design uses a vintage germanium transistor, and work wonders when used in conjunction with your favorite tube amp.
As always, this pedal from Spaceman Effects is crafted with only the highest, finest quality parts and craftsmanship, hand-soldered and handmade in the great city of Portland, OR. Featuring true bypass switching, open-frame Switchcraft jacks , detailed military-spec wiring and that classic Spaceman jewel light, there’s really nothing not to love about this wonderful boost effect. Cheers to Zak and the crew on yet another marvelous creation – this one has not left our shop board since it came in, except for the demo, and we don’t believe it will anytime soon, either. Check out our demo below, and then try and find yourself one of these beauts on the used, black or 3rd party markets….if you can…
