Happy Saturday, everyone! Today, we’re looking at the newest offering from our pals at Walrus Audio, which just happens to be a collaboration with one of our former interviewees as well. The Kangra is a filter fuzz pedal, giving you two independent effects side-by-side, with sonic options and combos that will last forever. You might even get to hear this one in action tonight, if you happen to watch a certain late-night comedy show that only airs on the 6th day of the week….
The Kangra’s Fuzz side features an extremely simple control section – basically, you use the Volume to control the output of the entire pedal, and there are two toggles for some fuzzy options. The first toggle provides two midrange contour options: heavily scooped (left) and flat (right). As for the second toggle, when it is switched to the left, you get a more modern style of fuzz, which is a bit smoother, with long and tight sustain. To the right, it’s more in the vintage realm, offering chunky, power-starved breakup and a ton of sustaining grit.
The Filter side of the Kangra gets a little more involved as far as controls, but offers a lot in return. Sens adjusts the sensitivity of the envelope applied to the filter cutoff; lower settings result in minimal movement, higher setting open the filter up nice and wide. Res sets the resonance of the 2-pole low-pass filter, from a smoother tone to a more aggressive sweep. Freq sets the filter circuits’s cutoff frequency, helping to shape the sound when combined with the Fuzz side, or other effects. There’s also an Env toggle, which either engages or disengages the envelope applied to the cutoff frequency, for softer or harder attack.
There’s also an Expression jack where you can externally control the Freq, giving you the ability to create more wah-like sounds. When both sides are engaged, the order is Fuzz > Filter here as well, in case you were curious. Loosely based on the Kay Fuzz Tone and designed in collaboration with Jared Scharff from the Saturday Night Live band, the Kanrga Filter Fuzz lets you explore new musical adventures and pathways, combining two of our favorite effects into one gorgeous pedal. Providing spitty, thick, octave-y fuzz and a bit of psychedelica via the filter, there’s lots to enjoy with this one. Cheers to Colt and Walrus Audio once again – check out our demo below to hear this guy blow your mind, and be sure to check out our interview with Jared Scharff from a couple years back as well!
