The Mu-Tron / Musitronics Phasor was one of our favorite phasers (and favorite pedals, really) to ever come through the shop here at Pedal of the Day. Big, bulky and badass, it helped define the phaser effect in the 70s and beyond, creating giant soundscapes of whooshing pulses and out-of-this-world types of sonic embellishments for all to enjoy. Fast forward to the present day, and we’re lucky enough to have the Mu-Tron company not only re-invented, but producing newer versions of their classic pedals we’ve grown to know and love. Having just checked out their Micro-Tron III Envelope Filter a couple weeks back, we’re stocked to bring you the Phasor III Optical Analog Phaser today.
Taking its lead (and legendary opts-circuitry) from the classic Phasor II and Bi-Phase pedals, the Phasor III packs all the sounds from the original phaser pedals into a small, pedalboard-friendly enclosure. In 4-Stage mode, the Feedback is fixed, enabling you to get classic rock tones that play really well with overdriven amps and pedals. In the 6-Stage mode, you have the ability to control the feedback via a control knob, as well as Depth and Rate controls for each mode of the Phasor III. Selecting these modes is a cinch as well, via the secondary footswitch next to the Effect Bypass switch.
You also get to choose between Square and Sin waveshape operation via toggle switch, and the two LEDs show the operation of the effect, as well as the current speed at which it is operating. Use the Control Voltage jack for either assigning to the Depth, or Rate for Leslie-types of fast/slow sounds, or for a synchronized cascading of effects. The high internal voltage of 18V ensures both high headroom and low noise, for continued pristine and flawless performance.
A classic sound, from a classic company, and a demo from us featuring one of our favorite (now)classic tunes: what more could you want? The Phasor III takes the incredible sounds from those original big boxes, squishes and squeezes them down and out pops a more managable-sized pedal, without losing and of the original’s mojo and gusto. Cheers to Mu-Tron for resurrecting a fabulous effect, and not cutting any corners to ensure it sounds right on par with the vintage units…if not better. Be sure to peruse their website for more great effects, and don’t sleep on our demo below!
