The Russian Big Muff from Electro-Harmonix is about as classic a distortion/fuzz sound as you’re going to find in the effects pedal world, but sometimes, you may find yourself wanting more options than its 3-knob configuration will allow. Enter D-Sound Effects and their Orion Distortion Fuzz. Utilizing a six-parameter control section, and using modern, sophisticated circuitry and build techniques, this pedal is a Russian Big Muff on steroids. Full of options and soaring, raucous tones, this black gem will surely send you to the moon and back.
Level, Tone and Sustain are the carryover controls from the Muff pedals, but the Orion really shines with the additional knobs that are present. The Mids control gives you full control of the tonal frequencies, assuring you don’t lost in the mix. Need more sustain and power? The Boost knob allows you to increase input level of signal and achieve it with ease. Finally, don’t forget about the Focus knob, which lets you to decide what kind of distortion/fuzz do you need. Choose between well-focused kind of fuzz, a fat, deep and saturated sound, or a number of increments in between.
Working wonderfully with both guitar and bass as well, the Orion is a well-rounded distortion and fuzz pedal, perfect for any musical situation. As you’ll see and hear in our demo below, this is not a shy pedal, by any means, aiming to destroy weak speakers and tender eardrums as it tears a hole through the space-time continuum. Alright, maybe it’s not THAT extreme, but it rips. This is the second pedal we’ve reviewed from D-Sound Effects, after the Fisherman Distortion (a monster in its own right, too), and we’ve got more on the way from their lineup, so stay tuned!
