Mr. Black BB-74x Overdrive

A lot of the pedals we review and demo have a ton of buttons, toggles and footswitches, and are able to produce more sounds than you could possible use at once. While we love those effects and all they are capable of, it’s nice to sit back with a really great-sounding, 3-knob overdrive and just plain rock out. The BB-74x Blues Breaker Overdrive from Mr. Black allowed us to do just that, conjuring up classic 60’s amp tones with ease, and putting a big fat smile on our face.

The BB-74x is based on the Marshall 1974x 18W amp, which featured two channels, EL84s and a Greenback T1221 speaker. Using the simple control section of Volume, Tone and Master knobs, the BB-74x easily replicates the juice, sag, response and harmonic magic of that legendary amplifier. A real plug-and-play pedal, this original Jack Deville design will light up whatever amp you throw at it, with a wide range of tones to play with, but not enough to get confused by.

Looking for a true amp-in-a-box type of effects pedal? Trying to get as close as you can to sounding like Cream-era Clapton? Want that Marshall sound but don’t have $2,500+ laying around? Then the BB-74x is right in your wheelhouse. Perfectly compressed when activated, this overdrive works equally great for chords, singing solos and fluid lead runs. No frills but plenty of thrills here, folks. Cheers to Mr. Deville and Mr. Black Pedals on another killer creation, one that lets you just sit and play, and get some amazing tones along the way.
