The first couple of pedals we had the chance to review from Haunted Labs (the Dark Aura Reverb and the Paranormal Fuzz) really knocked us out, combining stunning visuals with even better tones, both all-intriguing packages of sound and optical glory, in pedalboard-friendly sizes. This time around, they’ve teamed up with the spooky crew over at Coffin to bring us all the Frost Bite Fuzz, Coffin’s first new pedal in over 10 years! Both a classic and experimental fuzz in one, this blizzard of howling distortion will haunt you deep into your most apocalyptic nightmares.
The three parameter controls are a bit deceiving here, people: each one plays its own special role in creating the tones that spew forth from the Frost Bite. The fuzz circuit itself is a unique custom silicon fuzz, and is capable of everything from a clean boost to rich and devilish permutations of tone. Dial the Tone knob back for some slow, sludge-driven doom sounds, or slowly increase it for a more biting, piercing and cutting tone. The Fuzz knob has great range as well, from classic rock-ish amp driving to tasty, loud distortion to full-on walls of fuzz crumbling down around your stone fortress….or something along those lines. It is, as the description reads, “100% EVIL.”
Just looking at the pedal lineup from Haunted Labs, with artwork done by Martha Wirkijowski, is enough to make some folks shiver in fear, and once you hear them in action, enough to make some run for the hills. The Frost Bite is no different, combining attitude and sinister visions from Coffin with the sonic stylings and downright chilly feel of Haunted Labs to produce a most excellent fuzz effect. Designed and manufactured in the good old US of A, the Frost Bite is also true bypass, so your tone stays in tact even when you’re not using this incredible fuzz, which probably isn’t very often.
