Eventide has been releasing some of the most incredible stompboxes we’ve seen over the last decade, including the ModFactor, Space Reverb, PitchFactor and the incredible H9, to name a few. With such a wide array of multi-function effects, what would they focus on next? The answer comes to us in gorgeous fashion in The Rose, producing a modulated delay that hones in on tones that embrace the analog/digital hybrid world, with a seemingly limitless panorama of delay sounds that will overtake your rig, your mind and your soul….in the greatest of ways.
Forgoing the use of a DSP chip, Rose uses a simple and pristine modulated digital delay and combines it with all-analog circuitry designed for mixing, filtering and feedback. Mix is your analog wet/dry mix control, and Feedback produces analog feedback run to the delay line (this one will get wild and out of control in a hurry!). Depth and Rate set the modulation’s Intensity and Speed, respectively, while the Shape button selects waveforms from the Shape Ladder, letting you choose from Sine, Square, Random, Envelope and External (CV) modes. Use the Delay Multiplier button to enhance your delay 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x, for delay times up to 50 seconds!
You can select from 5 factory presets right from the get-go as well, which are, of course, fully customizable as you see fit. Use the Preset button to select and save presets, or scroll through them using the Hotswitch with your foot (more on that in a minute). The Delay knob sets the delay time, and if you push it in and turn it, you get access to Coarse Delay sounds, adding to the flavor of the Rose. Another small button here allows you to both invert the phase of the delayed signal and access Reverse Delay mode – do these options ever stop? You can assign the Hotswitch to control Tap Tempo / Infinite Repeat / A/B switching / LFO Hold / LFO Reset as well, for more hands-free operation.
The Input Level select switch chooses between Line and Instrument, and a TRS Input gives you Expression Pedal, Aux Switch and MIDI control. Choose from Relay, Buffered or Input Kill bypass modes, and there’s even USB control for MIDI, software updates and connection with the Preset Manager. Whew! That’s a lot packed into this small pedal, which is about the size of the H9. Fully committed to the art of the modulated delay, the Rose does reverse delays, slapback, chorus and everything in between with ease.
