Let’s face it: it can be difficult and expensive to find all the pieces you need to emulate some of your favorite rockers from the 1970s. Vintage amps and cabinets now fetch prices that most Joe Schmoe guitarists might not be able to afford, not to mention finding a place to unleash such robust and ear-smashing tones without getting a visit from your landlord or the friendly neighborhood police. That’s where the crew at Echopark decided it was time for a change, and created the scorcher that is today’s Featured Pedal.
The NARB is an overdrive preamp pedal, one that emulates the classic sounds of the JMP era Marshall amplifiers that were produced from 1967-1980. These amps, especially the pre-1974 models, are considered to be some of the finest in Marshall’s history, bright and loud with that famous Plexi sound. The NARB features a simple control section that mimics the controls on these amps, giving you a 2-channel overdrive and preamp that utilizes a master volume in the post section.
The Post switch activates the post master section, driving any amp at low volumes if needed, working together with the Master volume. The Gain section works on its own to create ferocious drive sounds, and both channels can be used simultaneously as well, for a wide spectrum of tonal options to choose from and experiment with. With no chip, compression, buffer or tone control, all you get it the rock and roll you want, without any coloration or altering of your instrument’s original signal.
Will it do a clean boost? Absolutely. Can it send your amplifier into early 70s overdriven bliss? Without a doubt. Will it peel the paint off of the walls of your practice room? Probably. The NARB is a true amplifier in a box, transporting your sound to decades long past, while retaining modern innovation to keep a clean and sparkling tone regardless of the settings you discover. Running through a Mesa/Boogie amp and an old 1954A 4×10 cabinet, we try to show off some of the amazing sounds this pedal can produce in the demo below – make sure you check it out, and then head over to the Echopark website for more info on this, their pedal lineup and, of course, their incredible guitars!
