The crew at Neunaber Audio have always had a reputation for coming up with engaging, progressive and somewhat futuristic pieces of gear, and their latest keeps that streak alive. The Neuron Gain Intelligence is a preamp, but with that name, you know it is capable of so much more. Boasting varying degrees of overdriven glory, along with MIDI capabilities, presets, speaker simulation and more, this is one tool that will heighten any rig that it becomes a part of.
The Neuron is a “multistage, dynamic gain architecture yields unparalleled control over the desired amount of distortion — effortlessly producing harmonic structures that range from subtle to dense and complex.” ‘Nuff said. However, there’s so much you can do here – the six-knob control section is secretly hiding a multitude of other functions, adding to the presence and customization of this effect. You can store and recall up to 6 presets via the onboard footswitch, or up to 24 via MIDI control. You have access to a studio-grade compressor right at your fingers, along with studio-quality noise reduction for higher gain level adjustment, too.
The culmination of years of researching both solid state and tube amplifiers, Neunaber both developed and then perfected new algorithms to successfully create new tones and EQ stylings, semi-based upon those amps, but with an original and distinct flavor. The key three-band EQ, besides sporting High, Mid and Low elements, also adds in Tightness and Presence controls, to dial in any sonic palette you may need, no matter the instrument, amplifier or recording setup. You can even switch to a speaker simulator to run the pedal direct, and the true bypass ensures consistent sound from your original source when the pedal is in bypass mode.
This is a lot of info to take in, as much of the gear coming from the Neunaber camp demands, but after a short period of exploration, you’re ready to rock. Not an emulation of any specific gear, but a pathway to new and creative enjoyment, the Neuron truly does represent a “gain intelligence”, bringing everything from a clean boost to a gnarly distorted overdrive to the table, and it sounds incredible along the way.
