If you like fuzz and distortion, there’s a good chance you love the sound of a good Big Muff from Electro-Harmonix. With so many different iterations, it can be tricky to nail down the exact sound you may be looking for, and even more difficult if you’re trying to afford any kind of original Muff made before about 1999. Thankfully, there are companies who try and recreate these wonderful machines, and we’ve got a killer one from Analog Fox for you today.
Based on the Sovtek Russian Big Muff, the Green Muff has the same simple control setup and killer tonality as the original. Distortion sets the amount of fuzz/distortion/sustain, Tone acts as either a high or low-frequency cut and Volume adjusts your overall output. The sound is darker, more distorted and full of sustain, ala the guitar sounds from famous users like David Gilmour and Thurston Moore. It uses the same old stock transistors (kt3102em) and diodes (kd521a), as well as some of the transistors, the tones produced are right on point with the vintage units.
Since they’re actually located in Russia, Analog Fox has access to original Big Muff parts and components that aren’t readily available to other parts of the world, especially the United States, so this is not only a great-sounding pedal, but one with pretty close specs to those highly sought-after original models, at a fraction of the cost. Also bearing the monikers “Tall Font”, “Green”, “Sovtek” and “V7”, this era of Muffs is one of the best, and the Green Muff brings us all a damn close representation of those classic boxes. Check out the Lo-Fi Looper that we recently reviewed from Analog Fox, too – these guys are putting out some great gear, and we can’t wait to see more!
