Innovation, inspiration and next-level thinking have become key aspects of the effects pedal industry. With a HUGE wave of companies popping up over the last number of years, you really need to have your gear stand out from the rest to avoid being sucked into the abyss of oversaturation that can present itself. Today’s pedal is not just three different effects in one, it is a complete work of art. The Black Hole Symmetry from Collision Devices seeks to imagine the feelings and awe one might experience when entering into a black hole….provided you don’t get instantly ripped to shreds. Ethereal, complex, ambient and crushing at the same time, this is one device that will surely rocket you into the stratosphere, and beyond.

“Ergosphere” starts things off, and it is a modulation delay effect. Controls here include Mix, Time and Feedback, as well as knobs to set the Modulation intensity and Speed. An internal trimmer also lets you adjust the speed of the triangle oscillator, with a range of 0.68 to 27 Hz. Two different oscillators modulate the echo circuit, which is based on the PT2399 chip, allowing for long, drawn out echoes that continually blanket your sound in perpetual motion and movement.

“Event Horizon” is up next, and represents the Space Reverb section of the Black Hole Symmetry. The controls are Mix, Echo (max time of 15s), Radiancy (amount of pitch shifter in the echo signal) and Pitch (pitch-shifting of the notes). This spatial effect modifies the pitch while adding in a high-pitched note, producing deep, cavernous echoes that resonate through the deep blackness that space encapsulates. Not your normal spring or hall ‘verb here, this one will stretch your imagination into full-on chaotic and esoteric bliss.

Finally, “Singularity” ramps this pedal into high gear, producing a destructive fuzz signal that only needs one control: Disintegrate. The intensity as well as loudness are increased as you turn this clockwise, providing ample walls of fuzz-out glory, sure to knock out anyone caught within a 4-block radius when maxed. These three effects can be mixed and matched as needed, producing a ginormous range of differing auditory stimulations, taking your rig to the next level, and perhaps even changing the way you approach not only your instrument, but music itself.

Designed to feed conversations about the hugeness of space, time and celestial objects, the Black Hole Symmetry is veering exactly where the effects pedal industry needs to go, and is blowing off doors and blowing out eardrums along the way. Subtle at times, loud when it wants to be and always an adventure, this triple effect threat holds nothing back, taking you on an unexpected and most welcome journey through your mind and being, landing firmly on another planet’s surface, far, far away from your norms and expectations.
