We’ve had the pleasure of checking out a couple of pedals from StoneFly Effects up in Canada, so we were pretty stoked when we heard that Marc-Eric was unleashing a new beast on the world. Even better, he was teaming up for this release with our friend Eric Calvert of Frost Giant Electronics and Switchblade Jesus fame, which peaked out interest that much more. The result is today’s complete monster of a fuzz, a RAT that took way too many steroids and overdid the protein powder in the best of ways. A ton of tasty and experimental options adorn this aesthetically pleasing wonder, so let’s just dive in and see what it’s all about….
Volume, Tone (Filter) and Distortion knobs adorn the top portion of the Switchblade Fuzz, and give you control over the main sounds this puppy spews forth. The controls on the side of the pedal, however, are where you get to make the sound all your own. There are SIX different clipping options available via the large rotary switch: Germanium Symmetrical, Germanium Asymmetrical, Schottky/LED, Silicone/LED, Yellow/LED and Clear Blue LED. These modes increase the distortion as you go up the ladder, getting heavier and gnarlier along the way. Right below that, a second rotary switch offers three different frequency filtering options as well.
There are three toggle switches as well, which help to add to the overall customization ability of this pedal. A Mixing Frequency switch changes how the rotary filter operates, adding more madness into the mix. A Bass Boost toggle gives you that low end punch you sometimes need, and the Slew Rate toggle lets you choose what harmonic content you prefer to let pass. If you’re even more adventurous, you can swap out the chip inside, as it is socketed, allowing for even more exploration into the mind and heart of this monstrosity.
You want a normal fuzz, a boring distortion, something that will just barely keep your audience awake? Then this pedal is NOT for you – it is loud, aggressive and unapologetic, and those are its finest qualities. A custom pedal that is as sonically unique as it is visually exciting, the Switchblade Fuzz is just a tank of sound that pours out of every one of your amp’s orifices. A take on a RAT, this one is so much more, and with all of the options available to dial in as you see fit, there’s no way you’re gonna be bored once you plug this thing in.
