If you are in the market for a Tube Screamer-type of pedal, there are a good deal of choices out there. Let’s take a gander at the Direwolf Overdrive from Highwind Amplification, shall we….?
Level, Drive and Tone make up three of the four knobs on the Direwolf, as you might expect from a pedal of this type. Throwing in their first curveball, Highwind gives us a clean Blend knob, allowing you to retain your original dynamics while introducing some punch into the mix. Inside, there’s an 18V Charge Pump for added headroom, using a standard 9VDC supply, and it pumps out an impressive range of clean output volume, up to +26dB.
Four toggle switches line the bottom center of the Direwolf Overdrive, and they really add to the impressive sounds this beast is capable of. A 3-position Mode switch gives you three clipping configurations: LED, Lift and MOSFET, while a 2-position Boost Switch can be used for significantly increased gain. The Growl Switch lets you choose from 3 options for adding in more bass frequencies, and there are 2 selections on the Bite switch to increase brightness.
Sharing a bloodline with that classic green drive, this monster doesn’t just scream, it howls….(and it also glows in the dark!)
