Since this will be our last review and demo of the year, we wanted to go out with a BANG!, and boy, does today’s pedal deliver on all fronts. The Camper Fuzz is a creation developed by CroyTone Audio, based in St. Louis, Missouri, and produces gain, volume and tone that will shake your walls and mystify your very soul. With enough settings and options to make it almost four different fuzzes in one, this seemingly simple beauty is anything but.
The Camper Fuzz features a pair of vintage NOS transistors that are individually matched for each pedal, creating a unique overall sound. The voltage for these transistors is inverted internally, letting the effect be powered by a standard 9V supply as well. Fuzz sets your dirt amount, Volume is your overall output level and Body gives you a nice range of EQ to work with. The Bias knob is where the fun really begins, interacting with the Volume and Fuzz as a voltage control. It subtly adjusts the gating from a hard edge of a more modern fuzz to a softer classic fuzz sound. Plus, it acts as a sort of clamp on the Fuzz control, allowing you to tame in the volume without sacrificing the total amount of fuzziness you’re getting.
Designed for Greg and Erin from the band Teach Me Equals, the Camper Fuzz is an apocalyptic, fuzz-laden distortion machine that takes no prisoners, and destroys everything that is unfortunate enough to get in its path. So many sonic options from one fuzz pedal, you’re gonna be completely blown away by what this thing can do. Cheers to Colin and CroyTone Audio for a remarkable beast from near the Mississippi River – we absolutely cannot wait to see what comes out of your shop next. As for the rest of you, have a safe and glorious New Years holiday, complete with all the family, friends, pets and love you can muster – here’s to a rockin’ 2019, folks, CHEERS!
