We’ve checked out a couple of pedals by Garland FX out of Houston, Texas, before, so we were excited that they wanted us to take a gander at one of their newer effects pedal creations, and put it through the ringer. The Pink Drive brings you the classic rock and roll sounds of the 1960’s and 70’s, complete with a couple of add-on control choices for you to seriously dial in whatever tones you’re after.
With a good bunch of overdriven, distorted and even borderline fuzzy tones to conjure up, the Pink Drive is no one-trick pony. Able to hang with other, more expensive pedals, it offers a nice mixture of op-amp fueled sounds, is extremely responsive and very tube amp-like in its demeanor and attitude. The Volume just increases the tonal structure as it gets higher, while the Tone control offers a nice range of High/Low cut possibilities, working perfectly with single coils and humbuckers alike.
The Gain control sets the dirt level, going from a slightly dirty boost to a full-bodied overdrive, even creeping up into a heavily distorted, fuzz-ish sound when really maxed out, all the while maintaining a rich feel with beautiful harmonic structure. A Smooth Mids toggle lets you fatter up or tame your input signal’s tone, depending on your pickup setup, while the second toggle offers you two differing diode selection choices. With Silicon and LED diodes added into the mix, you’d be hard pressed to NOT be able to find the exact tonal quality you’re searching for when using this gem of a drive.
Wrapped with that signature tweed they have on the majority of their lineup, the Pink Drive is one of Garland FX’s best creations yet. Pretty straight and to the point, this little fella will get the blood pumping and the amps a’rockin’ in no time flat.
