Here at Pedal of the Day, we’ve always tried to support the little guy, the company consisting of one or two employees, working in a basement somewhere, trying to create an effect they think the masses will love. These qualities are most certainly represented here today with our featured pedal, the Ahab Overdrive from Pine-Box Customs. Their flagship overdrive is an all-analog, amp-like pedal, pushing your amp into glorious (but not overbearing) breakup with ease.
Featuring the classic Volume-Tone-Gain combo of controls, the Ahab is a low-mid gain dirt pedal that delivers warm and rich tones. Crystal clear and extremely touch-sensitive, it has a little hidden trick to it: if you roll the Tone knob BACK, there’s a slight boost in both the Gain and Volume. Not your typical setup, it makes Ahab stand out from other three-control drives, and will really have you digging in to experiment with all it can do. Created to redefine the term “transparent,” this pedal will take you on many sonic adventures, and fits in perfectly with any rig or pedal setup in a flash.
Jordan from Pine-Box Customs recently posted a series of “How It’s Built” videos on the Ahab on Instagram, little short clips in sped-up time to show the creative (and tedious) process he uses to produce these pedals – seeing the amount of work that goes into each one really gives you a feel for the dedication and excitement he has about his work, and it really shines through in this pedal. They’ve got a couple more pedals in their current lineup, and as soon as we have ’em in our grubby mitts, new reviews and demos will be readily available. Until then, check out the demo ew did below, and then head over and support the man from Memphis on his quest to conquer the effects pedal world..
