We love a good mini, pedalboard-friendly pedal here at Pedal of the Day, and who doesn’t? The crew at CNZ Audio has devised an entire lineup of these little wonders, and we’ve got the first of many coming at you today. The Tape Echo is, well, a tape echo pedal, with a ton of features packed into a small enclosure, and offering a compact fit, but not sacrificing any tone…
Designed to emulate vintage reel-to-reel machines from decades past, the Tape Echo offers a surprising amount of sonic options with just a few simple controls. Level starts things off by setting the amount, or presence, of the effect in your signal chain. Regen adjusts the longevity of the echoes, from a single burst to a repeated pattern that seemingly goes on forever. The big knob on this small pedal is Time, the one that controls the actual delay time itself. Set this to anything from a short reverb tone to a sweet, twangy slap back to an echo-filled space journey – the choices are all up to you.
There’s a lone toggle switch present here as well, used to control the three separate delay modes: Normal, Clean and Reverse. Normal produces full, bold echo sounds, while Clean gives you a more pristine and brighter tonal option. Reverse is a fun one, as it takes your signal and plays it backwards, making for some exciting experimentation and new ways to create wide, vast soundscapes with your instrument setup.
Weighing in at less than 1/2 a pound, and a size footprint of just 3.75″ x 1.77″, the Tape Echo is tiny but powerful, and is sure to enhance your tone in one way or another. Perfect for making a small board with lots of options, or squeezing it onto an already crowded pedal setup for one more unit to use to create, this vintage gray machine will give you classic sounds and modern amenities simultaneously. Thanks to the folks at CNZ Audio for sending this our way to check out – be sure to visit the site again soon for more reviews of their pedals, and visit their own website, too, to see what they’ve got in store for you!
