Animals Pedal Firewood Acoustic D.I.We’ve had a blast over the years reviewing effects pedals from Ninevolt Pedals/Animals Pedal, and today we’re venturing for the first time into acoustic territory from these guys. The Firewood Acoustic D.I. is an active D.I. that fits in both live stages and recording studios alike, using analog and discrete circuits and able to output to a mixer or an amplifier without missing delicate expressions. This simple pedal really steps up the sound coming from your “unplugged” instrument, offering a wide range of connections, tones and even an effects loop.

The powerful 3-band active equalizer which can adjust the tone according to the characteristics of the music, the venue, the guitar and the power amplifier. High, Mid, and Low knobs adjust the tone, with a range of +/- 15dB, centered on 3.5 kHz, 800 Hz, and 180 Hz, respectively, while helping to suppress any unwanted feedback, too. Use the Gain control to add in some light saturation, without overpowering your signal, but adding in some necessary presence and punch to your acoustic sound.

The optional Effects Loop is key for adding in other effects to the chain, without losing any of the sparkle the Firewood gives you. Adding a little modulation or delay into the mix really makes you stand out in the mix, and adds another level of excitement to any gig. The side-placed XLR is a balanced out that can output the guitar directly to the mixer, as well as driven with phantom power. There’s an optional DC power out, too, to supply the pedal(s) in your effects loop without another bulky piece of equipment to lug around.

Animals Pedal LogoAll in all, the Firewood Acoustic D.I. boasts functional superiority, high headroom and the ability to really bring out the tone of the guitar itself. While not the most drastic effect ever, it will add an additional sparkle to your already signature sound, with excellent and not-overbearing results. Thanks as always to the Animals Pedal crew for another wonderful creation – we’re been fortunate enough to have reviewed almost their entire lineup, and can’t wait to see what’s next.
