This is the Number 23 Fuzz from our friends at Vaux Flores. Small, purple, full of tone and killer in any setup, this fuzz-based beauty features a splash of upper octave cream and heterodyned, atonal artifacts with a sound few compare to. Not overly complex, but with enough gusto and tonal range to get the job done, and done well, let’s put this guy through the ringer and see what comes out on the other side, shall we?
Upon first engaging the Number 23, you’ll hear right away that this is not your ordinary fuzz pedal. There’s an almost robotic feeling to this pedal, with a lower-register fuzz tone and it being capable of spitting out doom metal and classic rock in the same sentence. Blend is key here, as it mixes your clean signal in with the fuzz effect, for getting the perfect amount you need. Tone will do those super low-end sounds we were talking about, but also push the treble up and give you a nice boost as well. Volume sets the output, and there’s definitely no shortage of power coming out of this box.
The Feedback switch is another animal altogether, providing a sputtery, voltage-starved mode of crazy sonic glory. Some settings just completely take away all control from you, producing an almost looped feedback circle that destroys everything in its path, until you do a little knob adjusting. This switch, when coupled with the other controls, really makes this pedal stand out from any typical fuzz we’ve encountered, and will go from a slight, ramped buzz to a full-on sonic ear assault.
If all this didn’t make you want to hear and/or grab one of these for yourself, ponder this: the Number 23 is the first effects pedal to feature artwork created by amplified earthworms. Eh?
