With a long-standing tradition of being anything but traditional, Dwarfcraft Devices have been pushing, reshaping and demolishing the sonic envelopes that we are all used to, and show no signs of stopping that in the near future. A perfect example of the inventive and creative products they’re producing is today’s pedal, the Grazer, a bright orange behemoth that acts as a granular repeater, delay, sampler, and all out wack job glitch machine. Not familiar with some of those terms? Then get ready to take a wild ride…
This thing gets nuts, let’s just get that out there right away. It takes micro-samples of your input, samples and loops them as you’re playing. What?? You know what Volume and Mix do, but there’s so much more to explore here in the Grazer. Pitch adjusts the pitch shift of the samples, while Size lets you set the sample size – these both have big range and are a blast to mess with for hours. The Grab function is wicked, too, as it lets you hold and loop the noise grains being produced, for dirty Hold function, but more so. This can be achieved using the Grab footswitch as needed, or switch on the AGR toggle to have it on all the time, depending on what you need and the rest of your setup.
A couple other toggle switches round out the controls: F/R lets you set the playback of the samples either in Forward or Reverse, for a slew of crazy tones, and XPD picks what you’d like the optional Expression pedal to control (either the Pitch or Size parameters). You can hear in the demo below how these different options sound, and how the manipulation of these two parameters, we feel, is a MUST to really bring out the intensity of this pedal.
This one takes some digging in and getting used to, and you’ll have a blast doing just that. Like a pitch shifted delay pedal on steroids, the Grazer definitely opens up your ears in amazement, and will make you more creative and encourage you to take more risks in the music you make, too. Another wonderful gem from the crew in our home state of Wisconsin, Dwarfcraft Device crush this one out of the park and into outer space once more. If you don’t know now you know, so head over to their website to peruse an impressive lineup of glorious noise-making machines.
