A couple years back, we reviewed a pedal from a small company in Chicago (the Nothing Is Dead Fuzz), and it was one of the funnest pedals we saw all year. Happily, we have another offering from these guys to check out today, and while it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the last fuzz of theirs we saw, it brings the heat and the heavy with ease, and will surely rock your face. The FY-2 is a modded germanium fuzz, giving you a slight idea of what sounds it might be capable of producing…
The mods include a Shift control that allows you to get the classic scooped fuzz tone, but also a more mid-focused sound and a bass switch. One problem the vintage units had was the lack of volume, so a boost has been added to end of the circuit for a wide range of volume. The pedal uses 2N1306 Germanium transistors which are more stable than many germanium transistors.
In addition to the Shift control, two more parameters are present for you to make the most of your fuzz tone with. Volume controls, surprise surprise, the pedal’s overall output volume, while Fuzz (another tricky one) adjusts the amount of dirt you’d like the fuzz to produce. Although the control section is simple, there are a wide variety of tones to be found here, plus it’s easy to find a good sound in just a few minutes, with just a few tweaks.
The lineup for Big Game Pedals’ effects keeps on changing, so if you see one of these RARE fuzzes pop up, we recommend grabbing it quick and running for the hills, never looking back. A great fuzz with a clean look and dirty sounds, the FY-2 will play nicely with the rest of your board, and stand out on its own as well.
