For those of us in the know, the pedals from Main.Ace.FX are pretty easy to spot, as they hold a consistent look and feel throughout the lineup created by James Granuzzo. As for their sound, that too is consistent, quality-wise, if not always surprising and creative. Today’s pedal, the Shell Shock Fuzz/Tremolo, is yet another in this impressive group of effects, a 2-in-1 that is chalk-full of sonic exploration and enhancement, all trapped inside a big old box that is deceivingly easy to operate and master.
The Fuzz side of the Shell Shock brings the thunder, sporting Volume, Tone and Gain control knobs. There’s a two-way Fuzz Mode toggle switch, too, which gives you a couple of different sonic flavors to play around with. You can easily create old school, 8-Bit fuzz sounds, thick walls of fuzzy glory and just about anything else you can imagine for some serious dirty dirt tone.
The Tremolo side features your basic Volume and Speed controls, but there’s more here than most tremolo pedals, to be sure. A Wave Shape toggle gives lets you select from three different types of waveform, going from smooth and silky to stuttering, sharp and powerful with the flick of the switch. There’s a third footswitch present on this side as well, which lets you select from fast or slow trem speeds in an instant, virtually giving you two tremolo pedals in one.
Now, the magic happens when both sides of the Shell Shock are activated simultaneously. The Fuzz side becomes thicker, with a bit of a boost, and the tremolo waves add an entirely new sonic experience for your ears. The two sides play really well with one another, and it’s simple to dial in a great sound in minutes. Thanks so much to James and all involved with Main.Ace.FX for this wonderful effect – they’re creating some incredible gear, so be sure to go and check out their website NOW!
