Unleashing a fury of new and much-anticipated effects over the course of the last couple of years, the crew at Way Huge continues to excite and defy convention with their effects. Today we’re going to take a gander at one of the newest, the Russian-Pickle Fuzz, a dirt pedal that harkens back to the sweet distorted sounds of the mid-nineties’ BC183C Russian Big Muff, for all the grunge and angst you can handle. Easy to use and hard to ignore, this drab army green machine will send your tone into the farthest reaches of Siberia, and bring it back with power and gusto not seen by many in their lifetimes.
Based on but with less gain on tap and fewer controls than another well-loved Way Huge® pedal, the Swollen Pickle™, the Russian-Pickle is a big square wave-based fuzz with more focused mid frequency response and fat bottom end. Only Volume, Tone and Distortion controls are present, allowing you to dial in your sound with minimal effort or confusion. An extremely thick fuzz, bass players will love it as well, as it really keeps your low frequencies in tact, even bringing them to the forefront of your overall sound. Both guitar and bass can get into stoner-centric territory, loud garage rock and the aforementioned grunge-era sounds in a heartbeat with this guy.
Since the “cheap” Big Muffs of the ’90s are all now selling for upwards of ridiculous prices, it’s nice to find one with a comparable sound for waaaay less cash. Still giving you that classic Russian Muff sound, in a nice-sized, top-mounted jack enclosure that Way Huge® has become known for, the Russian-Pickle is an excellent all-around fuzz. Thanks once again to Jeorge Tripps and everyone at Way Huge/Dunlop for sending this gritty little bastard our way – stay tuned for our review and demo of their other new pedal, the Conquistador™ Fuzzstortion, coming soon!
