We recently had the privilege to review the first of two pedals from Life Is Unfair, the Dream Left Behind Fuzz, which we were quite impressed with, especially for it being just a one-knobber. Today we’re going to take a look at the only other pedal in their current lineup, the Awkward Breed Fuzz. While boasting one more control knob and some different sounds, this pedal takes fuzz to the next level, as you’ll soon read about and hear.
The Awkward Breed is a unique fuzz, in that it reacts accordingly with what your instrument is putting out. You can use high gain/output pickups to easily get into long sustain and thicker tonal property territory, or use lower output pups to create a more sputtery, random-type of fuzz (this can also be achieved by rolling back your instrument’s Volume knob). With the controls being Volume and Gain, there’s not a ton to figure out here, but the way that the knobs interact with not only each other, but with your dynamics and instrument controls, are what make this pedal really stand out. You can even get into cool dying battery-type space if you want, really opening up how you apply the fuzz genre to your playing and style.
Hand soldered and screen printed across the pond in Wales, the Awkward Breed differs from it’s partner in sonic crime, but has a familiar and welcome fuzz sound, too. Based on these first couple of pedals from Life Is Unfair, we’re excited to see what direction their builds take on in the future, and will bring you reviews and demos as soon as we can. Thanks to Mike and everyone in Cardiff for sending these both over to us – both this and the Dream Left Behind are super-affordable, too, and they’re being offered as an on sale package deal, so head over to their site and pick one up for yourself today!
