We recently got our first taste of what the crew at Stomp Audio Labs are capable of putting out, at least pedal-wise, so we sure were stoked to give another one of their products a go. While different in genre and appearance, the AMP Treble Booster is a high-quality pedal through and through, and though it looks simple…well, it is, but in a good way. Let’s check out this one-dial wonder, shall we?
The Treble Booster effect was made popular in the 1960’s, and can still be heard in bars and stadiums across the world today. The Dallas Rangemaster and Hornby Skewes were some well-known units, and VOX, Electro-Harmonix and Colorsound all built their own takes on this unique piece of gear, too. The AMP takes everything we know and love about those older units and modernizes it. Inside lies a huge, 30-year-old Germanium transistor, straight from the Ukraine, and is pushed via the lone control knob with a simple and elegant circuit. This results in classic, vintage tones, based prominently on the Rangemaster. It gives you more volume, increases your tonal character and even gives you a little bit of distortion when cranked up. Pretty versatile for such a basic-looking box, don’t you think?
The newest version of the AMP also have an internal control to let you adjust the precise amount of treble you want to amplify, from 120Hz up to 500Hz, for exactly what your rig needs. It plays super-nice with other pedals as well, ideal for driving a fuzz, or really opening up your favorite tube amp and making it sparkle. Not a lot to this one, but it’s an excellent to addition to any rig, make no mistake. The AMP Treble Booster might just be the missing piece you’ve been searching for to complete your coveted tone.
