Our first encounter with New Zealanders Flux Effects was with their Liquid Ambience pedal, a super-reverb drenched in ambient awesomeness that has had very few competitors to this point. So…we were pretty excited when Michael said he was going to send us a Liquid Tremolo to review and demo – needless to say, we were extremely happy with our second encounter as well. This tremolo has a boatload of options, too many sounds and tones to count and really adds some adventure and intrigue into your playing.
The Liquid Tremolo seems pretty basic at first glance, but after delving into it, this machine is a wonder of sounds and textures. The basic Depth and Speed controls are expected here, but it’s the Wave Contours and Tap Multiplier functions that really kick it into high gear. With eight wave contours to choose from (Spin, Smooth & Warm, Thick & Punchy, Hard & Edgy, Slice, Plink, Whip/Reverse and Custom), the possibilities are endless, and open up a new look and approach to your instrument. There’s even an option to create your own unique contour, and have it loaded onto your pedal by Flux Effects, further enabling excellent customization throughout the process.
The Depth and Speed controls work as they should when the pedal is in Manual mode, but once you switch to the Tapsync Mode, all bets are off. Here, the tremolo’s speed is controlled by the Tapsync footswitch, along with the chosen Tap Multiplier, which range from 1-6 times the original speed. This allows you to either conform to the correct tempo of the song you’re playing, or send the effect off into neverland, taking you and your audience on a spectacular sonic journey through space and time, thus expanding your mindset and sonic palette simultaneously. There’s an Expression Mode built in as well, allowing you to use a 5v “CV” source, an expression pedal OR a 250k volume pedal to adjust the Speed on the fly.
Stereo Ins and Outs make multiple amp setup a breeze, and there’s even a small Stereo Field adjustment trimpot on the back of the pedal that can open up how vast and expansive your stereo sound really is. You can even save you most treasured tremolo Preset by holding down both footswitches, then easily recall it by holding the Tapsync switch down for one full second, adding even more options to this marvelous piece of gear. To hear this thing in action, check out our demo video below – we can’t be held responsible if you feel the need to rush out and purchase one after hearing it, though, full disclosure. Thanks so much to Michael and all at Flux Effects for sending this gem on a long journey from New Zealand to the States – after experiencing the two pedals they’ve put out so far, we are excited to see what direction their next creation takes them (and all of us) in.
