The infamous Klon. We’ve all heard about it, a lot of us have played one or heard it live, and a couple fortunate souls actually own one (not us). For the majority of us gearheads who don’t have $1500+ to spend on one pedal, we look elsewhere to find that signature tone, which brings us to today’s featured pedal: the Klone. There are many of these floating around out in the effects world, and we decided to take a look at one made by Pedal Monsters, which seemed to keep popping up all over the place, and had good feedback.
This Klone features the same control panel layout as the original, consisting of Output, Treble and Gain knobs. The Treble is an excellent tone control, creating gorgeous clean boost tones, as well as accentuating the overdrive sounds when the Gain is turned up. The Gain itself has a wide range to work with, moving from a slightly dirty boost to a crunchy, expressive dirt tones, with beefy sustain and sparkle to really send your amp into the sweet sonic zone with little effort.
There’s a newer, nicer-looking version of this pedal on the PM website, as you can see ours has been through the ringer and back, but it gives off that special kind of charm. This plain, unassuming copper-colored beauty is a secret weapon in many pedalboard arsenals, and gives the original Klon a real run for its money (so we’re told). Comparisons aside, it is a great boost and overdrive pedal, regardless, and will kick your tone into high gear the minute you plug it in.
