Walrus Audio Red High-Gain DistortionIn the modern world of pedals, there are a handful of companies who are consistently pushing the envelope and getting new sounds and sonic options out to the masses, and have the following and resources to do so. One of our favorites is Walrus Audio, who just put out today’s featured pedal, and knocked another one right out of the park. The Red is a high-gain distortion pedal, complete with a huge range of dirt, a big EQ section and a couple of different flavor modes to really beef up your tone.

Volume sets the overall output of the Red, and, being a high-gain pedal, there’s as much volume as you could want running through this guy. Gain features a broad range of dirt options, from a low, gritty overdrive all the way up to a amp-stack-inspired wall of distortion, but with extremely usable intervals throughout the knobs’ sweep. The three-band EQ consists of Bass, Mid and Treble controls, allowing you to really mix it up sound-wise, from low, heavy, doom-y dirt to fat mid-heavy chords to biting, piercing lead tones with a couple turns of these knobs.

Finally, a Texture gives you two clipping diode configurations to choose from. When in the Up position, the Red produces a lower amount of compression and clipping, making it a great choice for a more overdrive-type of sound. Switch it to the Down spot, and the levels of compression and clipping jump up, for bolder, compressed chordal work and sweet, singing lead tones for days, even moving into fuzz territory when the controls are set right.

If you want a simple, basic overdrive pedal, you should go look somewhere else – there’s no shortage of those available absolutely everywhere. But, if you want some new flavor, with enough juice and oomph to rock with the best of ’em, check out this glorious distortion pedal right now. Cheers to Colt and the Walrus Audio crew as always, you guys are the best – head over to their website now to grab a Red and a couple other pedals of theirs as well.
