We sure love to experiment with anything that comes our way from Mantic Effects near Denver, CO, and that certainly didn’t change when today’s pedal arrived on our doorstep. The Vitriol (which means a sulfate of any of various metals, such as copper, iron, or zinc) Distortion is a simple yet complex dirt box, excellent for both bass and guitar, and one that leaves you hungry for more sonic experimentation. Plus, you can pick what colors the knobs are, which is wicked rad.
Level and Distortion are the two giant control knobs found on the right side of the Vitriol, and perform exactly as they should. Both have an excellent range, allowing for dirty or dirtier sounds to come through, and enough volume to make sure that they’ll hear you in the next county if you want ’em to. The pedal’s real assets are the Lo- and High-Pass filter controls, which absolutely open this puppy up and make it sing. These two filter knobs allow you to adjust the tone of the distorted effect perfectly, depending on your style of music, and able to adapt to many differing sonic crusades. Mix these two to taste based on where the Distortion knob is set, and you will have a dirty force to be reckoned with just blasting out of your amplifier, with the right amount of treble and bass to not blow out (too many) eardrums along the way.
As usual, this is not a pedal for the weak-minded or sensitive-eared human (or animal, really). Like all Mantic Effects’ pedals, the Vitriol is built using only high-quality components, and is precision soldered and wired with passion. A gain pedal with a ton of grit and a super-useful tone section, this is an exciting entry into the world of distortion for anyone who uses pedals of this type, and certainly for folks like us who review a TON of these kinds of pedals.
