We’re sure that, like us, you were intrigued and a bit awestruck the first time you saw the Canaglia Overdrive from Lollygagger FX (if this is your first time seeing one, please react accordingly). A big, fat wooden box with three simple knobs looked beautifully clean and adventurous simultaneously, and we wanted to not only hold it in our hands, but hear what magical tones it would release once plugged in. Well, we finally got our chance, and this thing is fun – here we go!
The Canaglia is really three pedals in one: Overdrive, Distortion and Boost. The Pre and Post controls adjust the output volume and initial gain of the pedal, playing well off one another and giving you a surprising number of tonal combinations for just 2 controls. Post takes care of the overall volume, and Pre adjusts the amount of input gain going to the Post circuit. However, they both sound different depending on where the other one is set; less Pre and more Post gives a cleaner gain sound, while the reverse results in more dirt and a more compressed sound.
The Gain stage and switch are where the fun really begins, and this pedal’s possibilities take flight. Able to engaged this circuit with the left footswitch, you basically have access to 2 pedals in one, as you can set the Gain knob for a dirtier sound, and run the regular circuit a bit cleaner. Half the fun of the Canaglia is seeing how all of these options work together, and getting all you can out of this flamed wooden enclosure. The Gain function is also excellent if you need an extra push for solos and lead tones.
Each one of these gorgeous pieces of gear is completely hand-built and made-to-order in Traverse City, Michigan, with all point-to-point hand-wiring. They also use varying stain colors and finish and a few wood types, too, to make each pedal a one-off, unique and collectable experience. Not to mention this thing sounds phenomenal right when you plug it in, and just gets more and more powerful as you immerse yourself in it’s sonic glory.
