Many, many moons ago, when we were first getting started here at Pedal of the Day, one of the first companies that took a chance on us and helped us get going was Vaux Flores, a small company from Baltimore, Maryland, who continue to create some super-unique pedals at super-affordable prices (check out their Gold Standard Fuzz we reviewed). Today we look at the Pejibaye Overdrive, a simple but powerful pedal that unleashes beautiful, semi-transparent tones with ease. Let’s crank it up and check out this one-knob wonder, shall we?
As you can see, there’s one knob on the Pejibaye, ’cause that’s all you need, really. The toggle adds in some spice, but more on that in a moment. The design of this pedal is meant to focus on your guitar’s original tone, and enhance it a bit along the way, whether through boosting the signal, adding in a small amount of dirt or going balls-out and making a pretty decent break-up overdrive. It basically goes from boost-on-steroids mode to refined and saturated drive as you slowly move the lone control from left to right, giving you plenty of range to play with in between those two settings. Harnessing up to +30dB of boost, the Pejibaye works wonders to enhance your tone, and give you that extra push your amp needs to get shiny and sparkling with a quickness.
There’s a three-way toggle switch present here, too, and this adds to the depth and capabilities of this pedal, for sure. Starting out with a nearly unnoticeable clipping option, for cleaner and a bit clearer sounds, the next step up pushes the sonic boundaries just a little bit, to a softer, LED-based symmetry style. Finally, move into higher gain territory as the last setting gives off some hard, silicon rectifier-based grit. A bunch of differing flavors and tones come pouring out of this pedal by way of this toggle, making a seemingly simple piece of gear into a true monster with range you wouldn’t have thought possible at first glance.
What can we say, really? This black and white beast seemed so tame when we opened up the box, and boy, were we wrong (and thats a great thing). Pick one of these up if you need a little extra juice added to your tone, and to push your amp, but not so much that it poorly colors your original sound, and still gives you a bunch of options at the same time. Once again, thanks so much to Travis Johns and everyone at Vaux Flores for letting us discover yet another gorgeous, sonically-incredible and budget-friendly pedal to share with our followers – head over to their website to see what other gems await your pedalboard now!
