Fairfield Circuitry Randy's Revenge Ring ModulatorRing modulators are a love or hate kind of pedal, in our experience (we happen to fall into the former category here at POTD), but it would be hard to find anyone that wouldn’t like to sit down and play with today’s featured piece of gear. Randy’s Revenge (where do these guys come up with these awesome names?) is a ring mod, for sure, but also boasts elements of tremolo, vibrato, fuzz and more, all inside a feature-filled plain silver enclosure. Let’s take it for a spin and see what the folks at Fairfield Circuitry have come up with THIS time…

Volume and Mix start off the control section, and work exactly as you’d think, using them both in tandem to dial in the exact Wet/Dry ratio and output level with ease. LFP controls the Low-Pass Filter’s frequency, and affects only the modulated signal, allowing you to tame the insanity sometimes associated with ring mods. The big fat Freq knob adjusts the oscillator frequency, and this is where you get so many different sounds. At low levels, you get the tremolo/vibrato types of effects, and as you increase this knob, Randy’s Revenge climbs easily into synth, fuzz, bells, chimes and more territory, expanding what you thought was previously possible from a pedal of this type.

A couple of toggle switches round out the external controls as well. The top one selects your waveshape, either Square or Sine, adding to the unique sounds generated by this pedal. The lower toggle putting the frequency into either Hi or Lo range, producing a multitude of sonic amazement not heard by many, nor produced by an extensive list of pedals, either.

Another strong feature of Randy’s Revenge is the CV jack, which has a plethora of uses and functionality. Randy’s Revenge can acts as a stand-alone VCO (Voltage-Controlled Oscillator), can control or BE controlled by other CV capable devices, and this jack can also be used to control whatever parameter you’d like via an external Expression pedal. A group of internal dipswitches allow you to customize the pedal as you see fit, and to best suit how you’re going to use this gnarly effect.

fairfield circuitry logoWhat else can you say about a pedal like this? Well, actually, quite a lot, but we’ll leave that to you guys to experiment and discuss once you get a hold of a Randy’s Revenge for yourselves. With limitless sonic possibilities, and a slew of effects trapped inside one space-friendly enclosure, you really can’t go wrong with this gorgeous pedal. Thanks again to our pals to the north, Fairfield Circuitry, for humbling us once more with another ingenious creation – we certainly are on our toes waiting to see what you guys unleash on the world next!
