Today’s “pedal” is a bit of a new territory for us, and one that we were excited to attempt and figure out. The PEDALpUNK! is an audio interface designed to allow analog devices to interact with digital workstations and computers without any quality loss. There’s a lot going on here, so let’s dive in and see what we can discover!
The three control knobs are what you use to dial in the sounds emitted from the PEDALpUNK! The Return knob returns the processed signal from pedals plugged into the unbalanced “Return” jack to both balanced XLR and TRS output jacks. The Send knob sends the signal appearing at the balanced input XLR/TRS combo jack to the unbalanced “Send” jack that is connected to the pedal. The Focus knob adjusts your signal’s input impedance at the Send jack, with normal being turned fully clockwise. This control becomes more apparent when used with non-buffered, true bypass fuzz and distortion pedals, which was perfect for today’s video.
For Input options, you can choose from the aforementioned gold-plated Neutrik XLR + 1/4″ TRS combo jack, which helps to maintain absolute fidelity when connecting to balanced audio equipment. As far as Output goes, you can again choose between a gold-plated Neutrik XLR or a bronze 1/4″ TRS jack, then route that directly into your recording software’s audio interface, allowing you to seamlessly and clearly record your favorite analog pedals and devices to your DAW. In addition, you can use two small pop-up switches to either lift the PEDALpUNK’s internal chassis ground, or invert the polarity of the output 180 degrees.
For the demo video below, we used the pedal we reviewed yesterday, the Wren and Cuff Elephant Skin Distortion, but with a bass instead of a guitar. Since our demos are primarily guitar-based, we don’t have a bass rig setup in our office, so this was a perfect way to showcase both the distortion pedal and the PEDALpUNK! at the same time. An engineer’s recording dream, this little box opens up a TON of new musical possibilities in the studio, and is sure to become a staple in the recording industry in the very near future. Thanks so much to Scott Eric Olivier of Casa Distortion and SSB Technologies for letting us check out the PEDALpUNK! in all it’s glory – check out the demo below, then head over to his website for more information.
