WE LOVE DELAY. Alright, we admit it, happy now? Today’s pedal isn’t going to help to decrease our love of this glorious effect, as it is chock full of killer tones, massive options and both classic and more modern delay sounds. The Magic City Delay comes to us from Swindler Effects, and this particular edition happens to have a bit of a cool design backstory as well.
Repeats, Mix and Time are all present as control knobs here on the Magic City, and all functions just as they do on your average delay pedal. However, there’s a fourth control that lets you really make this delay your own. The Filter knob alters the overall tone of the repeats, as well as filter in or out the tape-like artifacts that are created at higher delay times. This thing screams old school analog delay, with big, bold, luscious and dark repeats throughout, and just the right amount of delay time to fit any given situation.
Hey, look, Soft Switches! Still not the standard on all pedals for some reason, we love ’em on this guy, as the right one controls the bypass of the pedal, and the left one is an on-board Tap Tempo switch, which you really can’t beat. There’s a 3-Way Tap Division toggle switch as well here, allowing you to select from Quarter, Dotted Eighth or Eighth Note subdivisions, opening up the echo possibilities even further.
The crew at Swindler teamed up with designer Matt Kraus to create the Functionalist Design Series, an homage to the design principles of Dieter Rams. The Functionalist Series is sleek and minimal, and contains the exact same circuitry as our Signature Design Series. These pedals look nice in pictures, but holding one is your hand is an awe-inspiring experience, really. So slick and modern, simple and clean, the look and feel of these Functionalist pedals make them true works of art.
Looks aside, the Magic City Delay sounds awesome, too, with so many sonic options to choose from that you might get lost for a couple of days trying to find which settings you want to add to your rig. Full of easy user controls, fat delay tones and high-quality components, this is one slick looking and sounding delay pedal, and it comes with a price tag that is waaaaay lower than most delays you find with these types of options. Thanks so much to Drew and the Swindler Effects gang for making this pedal travel across the country to us – stay tuned for our demo and review of their Mineshaft Reverb coming soon, and don’t forget to check out the demo video of the Magic City below as well!
