We see a lot of fuzz pedals come through the shop, and today’s pedal is another representation of how we live in a marvelous and fuzzy age. Having recently reviewed their Rat Fink Distortion, we were excited to check out another pedal from Cathouse Pedals, especially since this time around it was gonna be a fuzz. The Bender Fuzz is a seemingly simple three-knob effect, but has some internal secrets and bold tones abound.
Fuzz, Tone and Volume mimic the sounds of the famous Three-Knob Tone Bender, the pedal that The Bender is loosely based on, but with a touch of modern tones and more reliability than the originals. The key to achieving these tones is a set of three matched and biased germanium transistors, and although the process isn’t always that easy, it’s an essential component to this pedal’s sound. The transistors mixed in with the three control knobs produce a wall of fuzz sound, ranging from a slightly overdriven fuzz to an all-out fuzz festival, all while staying warm and smooth, never getting too high up in the fuzz register to become irritating or scare away your audience.
The Bender boasts a ton of classic tones, all housed in a high-performance package that’s 9V ready and pedalboard-friendly. Also, if you missed it before, we’d like to reiterate how cool Cathouse Pedals are, in that five dollars from every pedal they sell goes straight to help animal rescue groups, a cause we here at Pedal of the Day could not agree with more. Plus, they’re making some really kick-ass gear, so you can support a small business, beef up your tone and help feed and take care of some animals all at the same time. Cheers to Cathouse Pedals for all they do, and for this rad fuzz – stay tuned for reviews of two more of their pedals coming up in the near future!
