It’s been a while since we reviewed a pedal from our friends at Vick Audio – they were one of our first pedal donators and supporters of the site two and a half years ago, and we’d like to thank them and acknowledge that once again. Their style, designs and pedals have become more sophisticated and versatile since the one-knob Fuzz Box we reviewed so long ago (as have our reviews, thankfully!), as evidenced by today’s featured effect, the Violet Ram’s Head Fuzz. Tons of tone and loads of character, this purple monster has all your fuzz bases covered.
The tones coming our of the Violet Ram’s Head, as the same somewhat suggests, harken back to a muffy-type pedal we are all probably familiar with, and produces some of those same great classic rock fuzz sounds we all love. Volume, Tone and Sustain are the usual control panel suspects here, but there’s an added bonus you get to enjoy, too. A toggle switch provides three distinct-sounding mid-range options to work into the sound of the Violet Ram’s Head – scooped (stock), flat and boosted, each of which bring their own style to the show. Reminiscent of some Russian models of the pedal it has similarities to, this effect gives off a smooth and saturated fuzz vibe, with a crisp, clear, higher voicing, while still retaining all the high gain distortion you’re after.
