Personally, we love compressors on all our pedalboards, but not everyone feels the same way. Some players absolutely swear by them, other think they’re useless and won’t come within 5 miles of one. Today’s pedal happens to be a compressor, the Saffron Squeeze from the newly-revived Way Huge Electronics, and while it appears to be a simple stompbox at first glance, a closer look reveals more controls, more options and a ton of useful sounds to help hone your tone.
While the MkI version of the Saffron Squeeze contained only Volume and Sustain controls (which are plenty for a lot of compressors), the MkII version boasts a whole new set of tone-sculpting knobs, perfect for dialing in a wonderful compressed sound. The Gain control sets the input gain level, the Tone control allows you to cut post-compression high-end and an Attack control adjusts the compressor’s reaction speed. These three new additions to the control lineup, along with the two original controls, make for an extremely dialed-in compressor pedal with a wide array of options, and a compression sound for any type or rig, instrument or setup.
All in all, the Saffron Squeeze from Way Huge Electronics showed enormous potential on a variety of pedalboards we tried it with, taming those pesky and unwanted highs while beefing up the lows that more often than not get lost, especially in a high-gain setup. Easy to use, fun to dial in and great to pair with other pedals, this is one solid and extremely affordable compressor.
