Apparently, there are still guitar players in existence that don’t like fuzz. Finding that fact difficult to imagine, today’s pedal gears specifically towards fuzz-haters, and has been affectionately dubbed “the fuzz for guitarists that hate fuzz.” Celestial Effects has been putting out some interesting and powerful pedals over that last few years, and the Aquarius Fuzz just might help to convert some non-believers into new enthusiastic lovers of fuzz.
The Aquarius Fuzz was designed with the ingenious idea of combining Germanium and Silicon fuzzes into one glorious pedal, while only using silicon-based transistors. The Volume and Fuzz controls don’t take a 180 IQ to figure out, but the real gems here lie in the next two controls. The Fat knob adds in bass/low-end as you need, with a nice range to get the sound just perfect, while the Imp knob allows you to adjust the input impedance for the first gain stage. Basically, this control gives off either more germanium or more biting, silicon-sounding tones, depending which way you have it turned.
This unique fuzz has an excellent transparent quality to it, too, letting your true original guitar signal come through in spades. The Gain stage features two pairs of parallel transistors, and the true bypass nature of the Aquarius makes it quiet and un-coloring throughout. Another bomber of a pedal from Joe, Dom and the entire Celestial Effects company, the Aquarius Fuzz is the best of both fuzz worlds, with a ton of sounds and a ton of control available as well. We’re about a third of the way through the entire Celestial pedal lineup, so check back soon to see our review of their next tone-shaping machine!
