We can get behind any good fuzz pedal around here, so we were pretty stoked when the cats over at Way Huge Electronics sent over their Havalina™ Germanium Fuzz for us to check out. Featuring a basic three-knob control configuration, this fuzz does what a good fuzz pedal should do: produce copious amounts of fuzz. With a hint of old-school Tone Bender fuzz sound found within it, this is a fun fuzz that will get you groovin’ with fat, vintage tones to rock your amp and your face.
The Havalina™ gets its unique sound from had-selected Russian germanium transistors, and uses a vintage style passive tone circuit, making it gritty but smooth and buttery at the same time. Adjusting the Volume, Tone and Fuzz controls will produce and wide array of fuzziness, ranging from a mellow sonic crunch to a swarm of bees-type fuzz, with varying degrees to be discovered in between these two extremes as well.
Using the controls on your guitar together with the controls on the Havalina™ will result in some superb dialing in of almost any fuzz sound you’re after, except wild, uncontrolled, 8-bit-type chaos, as that is not what this pedal is designed to do. You can, however, coax some great tones that lean towards a more overdriven sound, then crank up the Fuzz dial and your instrument’s volume knob for heavy, tasty lead and solo sounds, giving off a natural, open and biting level of fuzz.
