We’ve been checking out some pretty rad envelope filters recently, and were definitely enthusiastic about the Spatial Delivery from EarthQuaker Devices, as we are with anything of theirs that comes our way. As usual, this pedal doesn’t disappoint, and is EQD’s own take on what we thought was a standard pedal, which they have re-shaped and re-invented once more. Somehow part envelope filter, auto-wah, tremolo and more, this is one new pedal that will have you dancing in your seat.
The Range knob begins our sonic journey, which actually serves 2 purposes. In Up and Down mode, it adjusts the sensitivity of the envelope, while in Sample and Hold mode, it sets the overall speed. Filter is a cross-fade control between low-pass, band-pass and high-pass filters, but with the ability to BLEND these three together, this knob is revolutionary, as opposed to the normal toggle switch selection. Resonance controls the filter feedback, adding more body and ring to the filter voice, and rounding out the main control section.
The Mode toggle switch is a fun addition to the Spatial Delivery, changing modes from Up Sweep, Down Sweep and Sample and Hold. The latter is a unique, wacky mode where the filter is controlled by random voltage, with the speed controlled by the Range knob, as mentioned before. This produces all kinds of sounds, blips, bleeps and more, turning your once-tame envelope filter into a spaced-out, deep exploration stompbox. Placement in your pedal chain is interesting and fun as well, with different effects both before and after the Spatial Delivery resulting in countless configurations and sonic spectrums to discover.
Hating to sound like a broken record or advertisement, EarthQuaker Devices has done it to us yet again, taking a much-loved effect and flipping it up, down, around and through, leaving a minimal trace of its former self, and our brains. The Spatial Delivery will have you begging to play more, find new sounds and add another dimension to your playing altogether. As always, big thanks go out to Jamie and Julie and EarthQuaker Devices for being so supportive of Pedal of the Day, and for letting us take a listen to this great device.
