We review a lot of overdrive pedals on this site, as our rabid readers can attest to, and each one is unique and special in its own way. Some have a ton of balls, some are more mellow and laid back and some are entities all on their own. Today’s overdrive, the Piper Drive from Westminster Effects, definitely falls into the laid back category, but features some great tone-enhancement and a well-rounded low-gain range.
The hip thing on the pedal scene for the last couple years (or maybe more) has been “transparent” tone, and if you are searching for that, you have come to the right place. The Piper is a fantastic first or second-stage overdrive pedal, and can be used both as a tasty boost to accentuate your playing dynamics and add a bit of volume to your rig, or as a low-mid gain overdrive, giving your amp a slight punch and kick needed to beef up the tone a wee smidgen. Designed to give a great amp-like response, via Fender amplifiers from the 1960’s, the Piper will kick your tone into high gear immediately after you hit that bypass switch.
Speaking of bypass, the Piper Drive is true bypass, and hand made from quality parts by one individual dude in Lyman, South Carolina. Westminster Effects has a nice lineup of pedals for your viewing/listening pleasure, so make sure to click the link and check out their website. Also, we’d like to say thanks to Cody for sending this Piper Drive our way to review, and we’re looking forward to getting our hands on more Westminster Effects real soon!
